The mastermind behind Goli's TikTok Shop success
About this episode
Tommy is 22, from Virginia, and now runs creator marketing for TikTok Shop and Amazon brands, including Goli and NeuroGum. Before ecom he did unpaid marketing for a small gaming team, then spent about two years in sales, including more than a year cold approaching shoppers for AT&T inside Walmart.
He walks Nick through his Etsy dropshipping run, which ended when every account was banned within a few weeks, and the switch to TikTok Shop affiliate, where he made 1 to 2K in profit in his first month. They cover when to quit a job, how to vet a mentor, and why shoppable video matters more than any one app.
Key takeaways
- Let the job pay the bills. Tommy kept his sales job the whole time he ran Etsy, so every dollar the stores made went back into the skill instead of rent.
- Quit only when the numbers say so. His test: the business beats your job income for a month or two, and you are confident the vehicle holds for at least 6 months.
- Use free content to vet a mentor. He made a couple thousand a month on Etsy from free material first, then paid for the group whose free content had already worked.
- Pick the low barrier way in. TikTok Shop affiliate needed no ad budget and taught him how to make viral content, a skill he can carry into Shopify later.
- Network once you have something to offer. Going from zero to 5 or 10K a month is about a good mentor and hard work; networking pays off once you reach 20 to 50K a month.
