A wrong address is the cheapest delivery problem to prevent and one of the most expensive to fix. Once the parcel has left China, every fix runs through a local delivery company that has never heard of your store.

Measured on parcels shipped from May to July 2026, about 1 in 220 hit an address problem somewhere in the carrier scans. Only 58% of those still reached the customer, against 98% of parcels with no address problem, and the ones that did arrive were days late. Most of these problems can be caught at checkout or before the label prints.

This guide covers:

  • How often parcels from China fail or come back, and how often the address is the reason
  • What an address problem costs in days, on the parcels that still arrive
  • The Shopify settings that check addresses, and the countries they skip
  • Five checks to run before the label prints
  • What to do when a parcel is already stuck on a bad address
Share of parcels from China that got a delivered scan, May to June 2026: 98% with no address problem in the scans, 58% when the scans show an address problem
The same lines and the same warehouses. The only difference between the two cards is the address.

How often parcels fail, and how often it is the address

Across every parcel with a first carrier scan from 1 May to 31 July 2026, measured at least 67 days later, 0.63% ended failed or returned with no delivered scan. That is about 6 in 1,000.

By destination:

  • US: 0.60%
  • Canada: 0.77%
  • Australia: 0.56%
  • UK: 0.26%
  • Germany: 2.17%

Smaller EU countries ran higher than the US too, on samples too small to list one by one.

When the carrier scans on those failed parcels give a reason, it is mostly the address. About 3 in 10 failed parcels name an address problem: "insufficient address", "incorrect address", "missing apartment# / suite#", "moved, left no address", "addressee unknown". Address reasons outnumber "not collected", "damaged" and "refused" put together by about 8 to 1. Most of the rest give no reason at all, just "returned", so the real share is likely higher.

What an address problem costs on the parcels that arrive

Some address problems get fixed on the way. The driver calls, the customer answers, the local depot corrects it. Those parcels still arrive, but late.

On US parcels that hit an address problem and still got a delivered scan, from the first carrier scan:

  • Median: 14.2 to 14.5 days, against 11.3 to 11.7 days for parcels with no address problem
  • 9 in 10 within: 26.2 to 27.4 days, against 16.1 to 18.5 days

That is about 3 days longer at the median and about 9 days longer at the slow end. Outside the US the gap was about 2 days at the median, on a smaller sample.

Extra days from first carrier scan to delivered for US parcels from China that hit an address problem, May to June 2026: about 3 days at the median, about 9 days at the slow end
A fixed address still costs days. The slow end is where the "where is my order" emails come from.

Those extra days land on top of a wait that was already 11 days or more. A parcel that would have arrived in two weeks arrives in nearly four. That is long enough for a customer to open a dispute before the parcel turns up.

What a failed parcel costs you

On the 42% that never get a delivered scan, you usually lose the whole order:

  • The product and the shipping, already paid. A parcel returned from abroad is rarely worth bringing back, so it could be a write-off.
  • A reship or a refund. The reship is a second product, a second label and another two weeks.
  • The dispute risk. A customer who never got the parcel can file an item not received claim. Without a delivered scan you have little to answer it with. The guide to proof of delivery for parcels from China covers what wins those.

The customer typed the address, but the store pays for it. That is why it is worth checking before the label prints, not after.

What Shopify checks, and what it skips

Shopify has three address tools. Two of them only work in some countries.

  • Address autocompletion. Suggests addresses as the customer types. On by default, and it covers the UK, Germany, Spain, Sweden, New Zealand, the US, Canada, Australia and more.
  • Validate shipping address. Shows issues and suggestions at checkout when the address looks wrong. Turn it on under Settings, Checkout, Address collection, "Validate shipping address". It covers the US, Canada, Australia, France, Italy, the Netherlands, Belgium, Austria, Denmark, Switzerland and a few more, but not the UK, Germany, Spain, Ireland, Sweden or New Zealand. Customers there check out with no check.
  • Address format validation. A checkout rule, added for all merchants in June 2026, that blocks addresses that do not meet the format rules until the customer fixes them. It is under Settings, Checkout, Checkout rules.

The same validation also runs in your admin for the same countries. Orders get an address status, "Has issues" or "No issues", and you can filter the Orders page by it. That filter is the cheapest daily check you could add.

Germany is worth a second look. It had the highest failure rate in the list above, and it is one of the countries Shopify's validation does not cover.

Five checks before the label prints

Five address checks before the label prints: validate at checkout, ask for the apartment, require a phone number, review flagged orders daily, fix before it ships
All five happen before the parcel leaves China. After that, every fix goes through someone else's depot.
  1. Turn on validation at checkout. "Validate shipping address" plus the address format rule. Free, and it catches typos in the countries it covers.
  2. Make the apartment line easy to fill. "Missing apartment# / suite#" shows up in the scans by name. A clear "Apartment, suite, unit" field could stop some of these.
  3. Require a phone number. A local driver with a phone number can call instead of sending the parcel back. Some customers will not give one, so it might cost a little conversion. Worth testing.
  4. Review flagged orders every day. Filter the Orders page by "Has issues" and email those customers before the order ships. For the UK and Germany, where Shopify does not flag anything, look for missing house numbers and postcodes that do not match the town.
  5. Fix before it ships. An address edit is free while the order is still in the warehouse. Once the waybill is printed, the fix depends on the carrier.

When the parcel is already on its way

If the tracking shows an address problem after the parcel has left China:

  • Contact the customer the same day. Ask for the full address, the apartment number and a phone number.
  • Pass the correction to your supplier or agent with the tracking number. They raise it with the carrier, which passes it to the local depot.
  • Watch the next scan. "Address corrected" or "re-deliver to the new address" means it worked. A return scan means it did not, and the parcel might not be recoverable.
  • Decide on the reship early. If the parcel is coming back, reship or refund before the customer opens a dispute.

A local depot holds a parcel for a limited time before it goes back, so speed matters more than anything else here. The guide to what each tracking status means shows which statuses need action.

What to do

  • Turn on "Validate shipping address" and the address format rule today.
  • Check the countries Shopify skips by hand: the UK, Germany, Spain, Ireland, Sweden, New Zealand.
  • Ask for the apartment and a phone number in a way customers will actually fill in.
  • Filter orders by address status every day and fix before the label prints.
  • Act on an address scan the same day. The parcel is waiting at a depot with a deadline.
  • Count your own address failures each month, so you know whether the checks are working.

How we handle this at Commercive

Commercive is your all in one sourcing and fulfilment partner. We ship from China on frontier lines like YunExpress, Yanwen and 4PX, which pass the local carrier's scans back, including the address reason when there is one.

In our dashboard you can edit the shipping address or phone number on an order. If it has not shipped yet, the change goes straight to your store and on to the warehouse, so the label prints with the right address. If it has already shipped, the change comes to our team to raise with the carrier. Every order's scans, including any address scan, show in the same place, and our measured delivery times by line and country are on our shipping status page.

If you're currently running a brand, just give us the product and your daily order volume. We'll get you a quote within the next 24 hours to hold up against what you're paying today.

How we measured this. Failure rates: every parcel we shipped with a first carrier scan between 1 May and 31 July 2026, across all our lines, measured on 6 October 2026 so each had at least 67 days. A parcel counts as failed or returned when its last status is a return, a delivery failure, an exception or a held delivery attempt, with no delivered scan. Reasons come from the carrier's scan text, so a parcel whose carrier gives no reason is not counted as an address problem; the address shares are a floor. Delivery times for address problems pool parcels first scanned 1 to 21 May and 1 to 28 June 2026, in calendar days from the first carrier scan to the first delivered scan; the ranges show the spread between those cohorts. Shopify settings are from Shopify's help center and changelog as of 6 October 2026 and can change.

How often do parcels from China fail because of the address?

On parcels shipped May to July 2026, 0.63% failed or came back with no delivered scan, and about 3 in 10 of those named an address problem in the carrier scans. Counting every parcel that hit an address problem at any point, delivered or not, it was about 1 in 220.

Does Shopify check the shipping address at checkout?

Yes, if you turn on "Validate shipping address" under Settings, Checkout, Address collection. It covers the US, Canada, Australia and several EU countries, but not the UK, Germany, Spain, Ireland, Sweden or New Zealand. Address autocompletion, which is on by default, covers more countries but only suggests, it does not check.

Can I change the address after a parcel from China has shipped?

Sometimes. Your supplier or agent raises the correction with the carrier, which passes it to the local depot. It works more often when it is done the same day the address scan appears. Before the label prints, an address change is simple and free.

How much longer does a parcel take if the address is wrong?

On US parcels that hit an address problem and still arrived, about 3 days longer at the median and about 9 days longer at the slow end, measured from the first carrier scan. Only 58% of parcels with an address problem arrived at all.

What happens to a parcel from China with an undeliverable address?

The local carrier usually holds it for a short time, tries to contact someone, then returns it. A parcel returned from abroad is rarely worth bringing back, so the usual choice is a refund or a reship. Without a delivered scan, an item not received dispute is hard to win.
